Higher Degree Research Awards

As an affiliated college of the Australian College of Theology, Malyon College is approved to deliver the following courses of the ACT (CRICOS 02650E).

Master of Theology

The Master of Theology is an AQF level 9 Masters Research award.

Explanation: If you want to undertake study and research in a specialised field within the areas of the Bible and Language, Christian Thought, or Ministry and Practice, this course is ideal, especially if you aspire to teach in a theological college in Australia or overseas.

Duration: 1 year F/T (2 semesters) or P/T equivalent up to 2.5 years (5 semesters)
Workload: Thesis of 30,000 words.

Doctor of Ministry

The Doctor of Ministry is an AQF level 10 professional doctoral award whose graduates make a significant and original contribution to knowledge as applied in the contexts of broad range professional Christian ministry practice.

The Doctor of Ministry is an AQF level 10 research doctoral award.

Explanation: The degree is designed to enable men and women to produce significant and original research outcomes and as researchers demonstrate the capacity to design, implement, gather and interpret data, and communicate the results of the research for theses undertaken in specific fields of knowledge applied to various areas of professional ministry.

The Doctor of Ministry is distinguished from the Doctor of Philosophy and Doctor of Theology by the coursework component of the Doctor of Ministry, its shorter project and its focus on application of new knowledge in a variety of ministry contexts, whereas the Doctor of Philosophy and Doctor of Theology have no coursework component, and typically do not seek to apply the new knowledge in specific ministry contexts.

Duration: 3 years full-time and up to 6 years part-time

Workload:

  • research methods + 3 elective study units
  • Personal Formation Portfolio
  • 40-50,000-word project
  • Conference participation unit

Entry: Applicants must have completed an appropriate theological qualification and be able to demonstrate a minimum of five years of significant contribution in their ministry context since completion of their first degree. All applications would include a curriculum vitae, outlining various roles they have undertaken, positions held, major goals and most significant achievements. We encourage you to discuss with the College Registrar.

Doctor of Theology

This is the premier research degree for graduates who are graduates in theology or ministry and are engaged in the ministerial profession or aspire to teach in universities or theological colleges in Australia or overseas.

The Doctor of Theology is an AQF level 10 research doctoral award.

Explanation: This degree is designed to equip men and women as researchers in the traditional fields of theology and provide a qualification recognised by tertiary educational institutions for those who teach in these fields.

Duration: 3 years full-time and up to 6 years part-time
Workload: The course comprises a 80-100,000 word thesis.

Entry: Usual pathway is completion of Master of Arts (Min or Theol), but a previous research degree in another field may be recognised. Please contact the college Registrar for more info.

Doctor of Philosophy

The Doctor of Philosophy  is an AQF level 10 research doctoral award.

Explanation: The degree will equip men and women as beginning researchers in a broad range of fields of study related to the humanities and social sciences and provide a qualification recognised by theological and Bible colleges as well as universities for those who teach in these fields.

Duration: 3 years full-time and up to 6 years part-time

Workload: The course comprises a 80-100,000 word thesis.

Entry: Usual pathway is completion of Master of Arts (Min or Theol), but a previous research degree in another field may be recognised. Please contact the college Registrar for more info.
