Introductory PREACHING*

Lecturers Rev Dr John Sweetman

Rev Dr Ian Hussey

Class Time: Thursday afternoon

Preaching is a tremendous privilege and responsibility. Taking the Word of God and speaking it to listeners needs to be done well. This unit introduces students to the fundamentals of preaching and develops their skills in preparing and delivering a biblical sermon. It uses a step-by-step approach taking the student from the faithful study of a biblical passage through a process to producing an interesting and biblical sermon which, with the empowerment of the Spirit, will change people’s lives. The assessment will include the preaching of two sermons.

John Sweetman is the principal of Malyon College. He has been a preacher himself for over 40 years and has studied preaching under Haddon Robinson and Paul Borden in his doctoral program. He has a strong interest in preaching structure and has written an article in an American homiletics journal on a foundational form of preaching he has developed called “preaching in scenes.” He has also published an article on “interactive preaching” in Preaching Magazine.
