Professional Development at Malyon
Thought-provoking, interactive and relevant, professional development options for pastors or cross-cultural workers who have a theological degree or wide ministry experience.
Malyon is committed to the effective growth of Christian vocational leaders. We want to do all we can to ensure that our students and graduates have the best resources to do the job God has called them to.
Each semester we offer three one-week intensives in specific areas of leadership, ministry, Bible and theology. Our Masters Brochure for 2012 gives more details on the units being offered.
The Benefits of Our Approach
- The classes are reasonably small (usually about 10) so you will get to know other pastors and missionaries.
- There is a significant degree of interaction in the classes. Everyone gets to contribute.
- The lecturers are well-qualified and are experts in their field.
- The one-week intensive format enables you to slot lecture attendance into a busy ministry program.
- This is Masters level study and involves thoughtful grappling with the issues.
- The assignments are designed to help you reflect on your ministry.
The Awards
*FEE-HELP and Austudy are available for each of these awards
*Each award normally requires a theological degree for entrance.
1. Master of Arts (Ministry)
This is an eight unit (each unit being 8 credit points) postgraduate award, with two units being regarded as full-time. It must be completed within six years. Nested in the award is a four unit Graduate Diploma.
At least six of the units need to come from the ministry field. The other two may come from the theological/biblical field.
2. Master of Arts (Theology)
This is an eight unit (each unit being 8 credit points) postgraduate award, with two units being regarded as full-time. It must be completed within six years. Nested in the award is a four unit Graduate Diploma.
At least six of the units need to come from the theological/biblical field. The other two may come from the ministry field.
The Modes of Study
1. Intensive Mode
All the units are offered in intensive mode. This would normally involve pre-intensive reading and reflection, attendance at the intensive, and then post-intensive assignment work. Intensives are usually offered in March and August, but some may be offered at other times depending on the availability of lecturers.
2. Distance Mode
Some ministry units are offered in on-line distance mode. These units require no attendance on campus. At present we have MA students in Africa, Indonesia and Holland, as well as other States of Australia.
Levels of Study
There are three levels at which a student can choose to study.
1. Full credit level
This involves completing all the attendace requirements (or journal activities for distance students) and assignment work. FEE-HELP is available for full credit students.
2. Pastoral award level
This involves completing the pre-reading, the attendance requirement and a short reflection after the intensive. This level is not government accredited. The fees are considerably lower but FEE-HELP is not available. The pastoral award is a postgraduate study pathway for Queensland Baptist ordination.
3. Audit level
This involves some pre-reading and participation at the intensive. There is no assignment work. FEE-HELP is not available. Some pastors audit an MA unit every year as a form of professional development.
